800 Years of English History

800 Years of English History. Excellent article in The Guardian summarising 800 years of English history, and the 20 best places to visit to experience it.

My particular favourite is the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, birth place of the Industrial Revolution that began the industrialisation of the modern world. It's not really a museum, more a town where you can go into the period shops, schools, and ride on the buses and canal boats. The 'staff' are more like actors, dressing and acting-out day-to-day life 200 years ago, and the whole thing is so accessible and enjoyable. And you must try the fish and chips from the period chip shop, probably the best I've eaten (the 'secret' is they use beef fat to fry things, just like chip shops of old, rather than todays vegetable substitutes...it makes a big difference):
